About your trainer
Hi, I am Chantal Howard, a Certified Cat Trainer (ABCCT) in Ottawa, Ontario. In 2019, I began working with cats and was deeply fascinated with how different cat's behaviour was vastly different from other cats behaviour. I wanted to know more about this and why.

I realized cats were misunderstood and that every cat had its own way of communicating with people, and had similar ways of communicating overall.
Over time, I wanted to pursue a career in feline behaviour. After, my completion and becoming a Certified Cat Trainer, I still pursue education in feline behaviour to stay informed and updated on the latest feline behaviour. My goal is to work directly with cats, owners, organizations, rescues, and conduct research.

I am passionate about the behaviours of cats and how they correlate between humans and other pets (ferrets, large birds, dogs) for a lasting relationship in harmony. ​
During initial assessments, I gather all the information I need (pre-recorded videos, photos, explanations on problematic behaviours/concerns, health, frequent areas the cat goes in the home, etc.) while asking clarifying questions to understand what is happening. During the consultation a training plan is built, highlighting all the different problem areas (i.e. scratching, biting, inappropriate elimination, cat-cat conflicts, etc.) into the structured training plan. Each plan is designed to fit each owners schedule and be easy to follow. Follow-up appointments are included in all packages with e-mail support and private Facebook peer group.
My training is using positive reinforcement (not forcing a cat to do something) and shaping undesirable behaviours into positive behaviours as well as training (i.e. basic commands, games, behaviour training). I provide evidence based solutions with carefully tailored individual behaviour plans that are modifiable during progression of training. I regularly keep up-to-date on training in cat behaviour, cat training, science, feline psychology, and any topics related to cats in my field of work. I am a member of International Associates of Animal Behavior Consultants and an Alumni of Animal Behaviour College graduate Cat Trainer Program (Certified Cat Trainer).
